Desde que vivió en Manresa Ignacio había sufrido una enfermedad del estómago y a pesar de los cuidados de los médicos, diez años después de su llegada a Roma empezó a agravarse. El 31 de julio de 1555 estando en la Casa Profesa de Roma murió acompañado de algunos jesuitas. La Virgen y el Niño Jesús, a quien consagró la orden que fundó, observan la escena.
